United Two Good

Two goals in a magical 2nd half minute gave World United a deserved victory at Belvoir FC.

On a damp slick pitch both teams started in a positive mode pressing forward at every opportunity.  The WU back line coped well with the initial pressure and grew in confidence as the game progressed.  On the few occasions when the home side looked like making the breaking through Thomas (reliable) Mockey was there to thwart the danger.  In the midfield, new boys Rodgers and Walker jelled well with the established players.  But it was the shooting of Shaw that almost brought dividends when one of several efforts hit the base of the post.

After a fairly even opening ten minutes of the second period WU began to take more of a grip on the game. With the Belvoir boy’s struggling to hold out defensively WU forced a series of corner kicks. From one set piece the cross into a packed goalmouth eluded everyone except Boyd who expertly steered the ball into the net from his usual back post haunt. Straight from the restart Belvoir lost possession and a low pass into the box found Shaw who’s spin and shimmy baffled defenders and they could only watch as he crashed in WU’s second goal. The home team tried to raise their game but they could make little headway against a resolute WU defence with Parkinson a colossus at its heart. A third strike seemed to be on the cards when Murphy burst into the box but the home keeper made a brilliant block.

Just before the final whistle Moffett made one of his mesmerising runs up the right flank and his inch perfect cross found the feet of Boyd who was unmarked, bang centre of goal and six yards out, He couldn't’t miss! Could he???
